MacGregor Downs Golf Course

MacGregor Downs Golf course was established in 1967 by Gregory Poople, a local businessman who developed the MacGregor Downs community which surrounds this country club and golf course nestled on the tranquil shores of Lake MacGregor.  Situated on the southernmost tip of Cary in the late 1960's the course and community are now considered to be in the premier location,  "inside the beltline" of Cary and the soon to be completed Triangle Outerloop.

Originally envisioned as a men's golf retreat, this country club course was designed by world renowned William Bryd with Bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways.  The lushly wooded setting is reminiscent of Augusta with the towering pines and mounds of azeleas.  The 72 par 18 hole course is beautifully seasoned with four sets of tee boxes, multiple water hazards, and a signature 18th hole providing a perfect round of golf on this winding course where no two holes are adjacent.

Now a full service member owned country club, MacGregor played host to the Liggett Myers PGA tour Championship durning the 70's welcoming Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino, and Player.  Collegiate championships including the ACC matches gave rise to many of today's star competitors in the 80's and 90's.  Davis Love lll, Steward Cink, David Duval, Phil Mickelson, and many others strolled the fairways.  Today the Children's Flight of Hope Charity Tournament is an annual affair.

Under the guidance of Master Professional, Ben Hynson, the full service pro shop is professionally staffed for both child and adult instruction, equipment and apparel sale, and offers a variety of matched play and tournament opportunities for players at all levels and ages.  With it's proud Scottish heritage, MacGregor Downs now provides it's membership and their guests a full range of activities from golf to book clubs, pool and tennis facilities to yoga classes, fine dining and social activities creating a country club environment rich in tradition and fostering friendships.
